Hampton Robotics Team

Calling All Robots and Lego Fans!

Hello Hampton Families -

Back in June we sent out an invitation to all Hampton Students announcing that we are forming FIRST Lego League (FLL) Robotics teams for grades K through 5. FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition in Science and Technology) was started 30 years ago and initially targeted high school students in the USA. It has now expanded world wide and has programs starting at Kindergarten through High School.

Our initial invitation resulted in sufficient interest for us to register 8 teams (5 FLL JR teams for grades K-3 and 3 FLL teams for grades 4 & 5). We currently have openings for additional students in all grade levels and have extended registration until August 12, 2019.

Rochester High School’s FIRST Robotics Competition (FRC) team the FEDS (Falcon Engineering Design and Solutions) is covering the cost for our team registrations and Lego kits. Their Mentors and Students are also providing support for our meetings and Expos. Our cost will be $50 per student which covers supplies, T-Shirts, supplies, etc. Any families needing assistance with the fees should let us know during registration night (no one will be turned away).

Grades K-3 FLL JR teams will be meeting on Mondays from 6:00 PM to 7:30 PM for about an hour of activities plus set up & clean up.

See this link for more information on FLL JR: https://firstinmichigan.us/JrFLL/about/

Grades 4-5 FLL teams will be meeting on Wednesdays from 6:00 PM to 8:30 PM for about 2 hours of activities plus set up & clean up. The FLL teams from Meadow Brook and University Hills will be meeting with us at the same time. This will allow all three schools to share knowledge and practice together.

See this link for more information on FLL: https://firstinmichigan.us/FLL/about/

Both the FLL JR (K-3) and FLL (4-5) teams will be meeting at the Rochester High School Upper Cafeteria and in the surrounding classrooms.

Important Dates:

August 12 - Cutoff for accepting applications for the teams. Teams will be formed based on applications received to that point in time and will be announced at the meeting on the 13th. Please note that we have a limited number of slots available for each grade level.

August 13 - Parent Information Meeting, Game Reveal, Pay $50 Registration and Mentor’s Meeting at RHS 6:30 PM to 8 PM, $50 registration fee (cash or check paid to order of Rochester Community Schools), Parent/Coach Registration, (Each team needs two registered Coaches who will be provided with coaching instruction book and assistance from RHS). Note: this is intended as a parent meeting, but bring your kids if necessary.

September 9 - FLL JR (K-3) first full team meeting at RHS 6 PM to 7:30 PM and every Monday that school meets through November (tentatively)

September 11 - FLL (4-5) first full team meeting at RHS 6 PM to 8:30 PM and every Wednesday that school meets through November (tentatively)

December 14 - Tentative date for FLL JR Expo at RHS, this will include teams from several RHS feeder schools, half in the morning and half in the afternoon with a celebration & lunch between noon & 1 PM

November 9, 16, or 23 - FLL Qualification Tournament, each FLL team will attend one of these events (hopefully all Hampton teams will be at same event)

December 7 or 14 - FLL Michigan State Championship, those FLL teams that successfully qualified will be invited to one of the State Championships

April 29 - May 2, 2020 - World Festival in Detroit, Participation is dependent on lottery (FLL JR) and State Championship standing (FLL), though all students and their families are encouraged to visit the Festival as this is the last year it will be held in Detroit.

Some important things to keep in mind:

1) This is about gaining an appreciation for science and technology, learning to work as a team, and having fun at the same time.

2) We are using Legos, a skill all children seem to have (no use of tools required).

3) FLL JR teams will learn very simple programming (no previous programming experience required).

4) FLL teams will learn slightly more involved programming (don’t worry parents, your kids will teach you).

As much as possible we want an even split between boys and girls on each team. Currently only 1/3 of our applicants are girls. Parents, please do not let this opportunity for you daughters to develop a passion for science & technology pass her by.

Each team will need two adult Parent/Co-Coaches (students of parents who volunteer to become a registered coach will be given preference if open slots are limited). All parents co-coaching will need to complete an iChat form and a Youth Protection Screening and will need to be committed to attending every team meeting and the fall Expos/Competitions.

Please fill out your application carefully as only correct & complete applications will be considered.
